Seam allowance (now and then called decorates) is the territory between the texture edge and the sewing line on (at least two) bits of material being sewn together. Seam allowances can go from 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) wide to as much as a few inches.[1] Commercial examples for home sewers have seam allowances running from 1⁄4 to 5⁄8 inch (6.4 to 15.9 mm).[2]


Sewing industry seam allowances go from 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) for bended regions (for example neck line, armscye) or concealed seams (for example confronting seams), to 1 inch (25 mm) or more for territories that require additional texture for definite fitting to the wearer (for example focus back). Bended seams for the most part have a littler seam allowance than straight seams; massive seams with a lot of seam allowance are progressively hard to press into or fit in with a bended shape.
